The 2014 Asian Games, officially known as the 17th Asia, is held by Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4, 2014. The Chinese basketball team has won seven of the last nine men's gold medals stretching in the basketball competition. However, since their 2010 Asiad victory on home soil in Guangzhou, China has seen the retirement of "Great Wall of China" - Yao Ming (5 times NBA All Star), and have also lost former NBA players Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian.
Now, China is hoping a new version of their famous "Great Wall of China" can help maintain their Asian Games basketball dominance as they come under heavy attack from other rivals such as the hosts South Korea, Iran and the Philippines. Zhou Qi, 18, will tower over the opposition at 2.17 meters (7ft 1 1/2in), while Wang Zhelin is equally intimidating at 2.14 meters (7ft 1/4in). They are among the players drafted in as part of China's rebuilding programme under coach Gong Liuming after their defeat to South Korea at last year's FIBA Asian Championship.
China, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan were distributed in Preliminary Round Group C. In these two matches, Wong Zhelin scored 13 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. It seems that China can trust this Young guy to be the new leader. I hope that he can continue doing his best to lead and motivate his teammates in the coming matches. I wish the young Chinese basketball team can defend the crown successfully at the end.
