Yesterday, I joined as a volunteer in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Beach Festival 2014 in Repulse Bay Beach.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Beach Festival 2014 is held from October 11 to October 26. This 16 days festival highlights Beach Rugby, Open Water Swimming and Rowing at Repulse Bay, while the Sea Kayak and Surfski competitions will take place off Stanley Beach. A temporary sand court has been built on Sha Tsui Road Playground in Tsuen Wan as a venue for the Beach Football, Beach Handball and Beach Volleyball competitions. The HKJC Beach Festival 2014 is co-organized by seven National Sports Associations include Hong Kong’s Football Association, Handball Association, Canoe Union, Rowing Association, Rugby Football Union, Amateur Swimming Association and Volleyball Association. The Home Affairs Bureau and the Leisure and Culture Services Department are the sponsoring bodies. And Technological and Higher Education Institute (Thei) is one of the organizations that is providing human resources support for the event.
My responsibility was taking care around 20 children came from one of the non-government organizations and bring them to different activities such as Sand Sculpting, Yoga-Stretching session. I enjoyed playing with the kids and doing volunteer in Beach very much. The atmosphere there was energetic and optimistic. However, the organizer was lack of experience on managing this kind of big event. For example, they prepared not enough food for the participants and players. And some of the volunteers didn't clear their job duties and responsibilities. Therefore, some of the co-workers were just walking around and chit chat with other participants.
From my points of view, the organizer needs to estimate how much food they need to prepare for the participants and players. Also, ask the volunteers or waiters/waitress to allocate the food instead of let the participants took by themselves. Besides, the team leaders should brief their team members very clearly before the event start to make sure each of them know their jobs and responsibilities.
Nobody's perfect. The most important thing is learning from the experience and mistakes. I wish the following days of HKJC Beach Festival 2014 can become better and keep the energetic atmosphere.
I strongly recommend you to join the Hong Kong Jockey Club Beach Festival 2014 in the coming days, especially the last day (26/10) on Sha Tsui Road Playground in Tsuen Wan (Location please find on Googlemap). Moreover, a carnival will be held on there. All the competitions and activities will offer free admission to the public. For more details, please visit
